The Future of Exploration
So we're going through the Old testament. Tonight we finished Amos, Obediah, and Jonah. I was really looking forward to it...read through Amos and Jonah on my lunch break today. Talk about good stuff. So much stuff in the short book of Jonah that I had missed before...makes me want to read the whole Bible over a few times a year. Of all the stuff that Mike is teaching us each week, I'd estimate that I knew maybe 15% of it - especially the history, and how it all fits together. These classes have been long (tonight we went from 7:00 'til just after 10:00) but it's been so worth it. Not only am I getting a better handle on the history of the Old testament, but so many things in the New Testament have more meaning when you know the background behind it. Good stuff.
Reminds me of a little challenge I gave to the c&c group a couple weeks ago...a challenge to seek out some of the un-discovered parts of their bibles. It was based on an article from Explore Magazine that talked about how so many of the Earths un-reachable, un-attainable feats have been conquered. Everest has become a playground for the rich and famous, tourists visit the Titanic wreckage. Nearly every mountain peak has been summited, every forest, every desert crossed. The article went on to list however, hundreds of places that have never been reached. As I read the article, I couldn't help but wonder how many parts of the bible which I've been reading for years have yet to be discovered. Oh I've done the "read-through-the-bible-in-a-year" thing a few times, but to be honest, I skimmed - to say the least - most of the Old Testament. Forget about studying it, or even just reading it while conscious, I just wanted to get through it, and on to the "interesting" stuff. Crazy. So yeah...I've got a little exploring left to do :)
